My daughter is being confirmed in May – does the confirmation dress need to be bought as early as a wedding dress?
Buy the confirmation dress in January or February, when there is still a good selection and time to have it altered. January to March is the busy period, because most confirmations take place in April and May. With us the dresses hang in the shop and can be taken home the same day, so you don't have to order and wait. So there is no need to start a year ahead, as many do with a wedding dress. Book an appointment and the dresses will be ready for you. See our confirmation dresses.
What is the latest we can buy a confirmation dress from you, and does it need ordering well in advance like a wedding dress?
There is no ordering deadline for confirmation dresses with us, because we don't order them in. Many people think it has to be ordered months ahead like a wedding dress, but that isn't necessary here. The dresses hang in the shop all the time, so you can come two weeks before the confirmation and go home with one. If the tailor needs to alter the dress, allow a couple of weeks and mention the date when you buy. If it's close, get in touch via our contact page and we will quickly find a time.
What does a confirmation dress cost in a wedding dress shop, and what should we budget on top?
Confirmation dresses with us start at around 1,000 kr., and they are dresses she can also wear to parties afterwards. That is a long way from the price of a wedding dress, so the budget can easily be kept down. Add a little for alterations, which start at 250 kr. with our own tailor, and for shoes. Tell us your budget when you come, and we will only bring out dresses within it, so she avoids falling for one that is too expensive. See our confirmation dresses.
Should a confirmation dress be short or long, or does a long one look too much like a wedding dress?
A confirmation dress can be either short or long, and the choice is mostly about what the confirmand herself would like. A short or knee-length dress is easier to move in and gets worn again more often, while a long dress feels more festive. A long white dress can quickly look like a small wedding dress, though, so choose a simple cut if she goes for long. Many choose a length just above the knee, because it works both in church and at the party. Try one of each in front of the mirror. See our short and long confirmation dresses.
Does the confirmation dress have to be white, or can it have colour so it doesn't look like a wedding dress?
No, a confirmation dress doesn't have to be white. White is the tradition and still the best seller, but powder pink, light blue, silver, champagne and black are worn too. If you go for white, keep it simple without a train or big skirts, so it doesn't look like a wedding dress. Some churches and priests have a view on the colour, so ask if you are unsure. She will wear the dress for many hours and would ideally wear it again, and that is where a colour often beats white. See our confirmation dresses in white and colours.
Can my daughter's confirmation dress be strapless like a wedding dress when she is going to church?
The Danish national church has no rule against strapless confirmation dresses, but some ministers prefer the shoulders covered during the confirmation itself. Ask the minister, it takes two minutes. If the shoulders need covering, choose a bolero, a wrap or a dress with detachable sleeves that can come off for the party. Then you do not have to choose a dress based on a guess. Find boleros and wraps among our accessories.
Which shoes go with the confirmation dress so she can last all day, and does the same advice apply as for a wedding dress?
Choose confirmation shoes she can stand in all day, because church, photos and the party follow straight after one another. A low heel, a block heel or smart flat shoes are better than her first stilettos. Buy the shoes before the dress is taken up, because the length is measured in exactly those shoes. It is the same advice we give brides: the shoes must be sorted before the wedding dress is hemmed. Let her wear them in at home a few times so she doesn't get blisters. Read more tips in our questions about shoes.
Can the confirmation dress be worn to other parties afterwards, or is it like a wedding gown, just for one day?
Yes, if you choose with that in mind. A confirmation dress in a colour, with a length just above the knee and without too much decoration can be worn to birthdays, summer parties and later the graduation party. If the dress is white and very festive, it often only gets worn on the one day. The same goes for a confirmation dress that looks like a small wedding gown. Ask her in the fitting room where she could see herself wearing the dress again. See our confirmation dresses that can be worn again.
My daughter is still growing – when should we have her measured for the confirmation dress, and is it done as with a wedding dress?
Buy the confirmation dress in January or February, but have it altered as close to the day as possible, ideally two to three weeks before. It is the same principle as with a wedding dress, where the final fitting is also close to the day. Choose a style with a lace-up back, elastic in the back or a slightly looser cut, so there is room to adjust. A dress bought a year in advance rarely fits when the day comes. We measure her when you come. See also our size guide.
Can the confirmation dress be altered like a wedding dress if it is too long or too big?
Yes, the confirmation dress can be altered, and most need adjusting, at least in length. As with a wedding dress, it is usually the length that needs changing. We have our own in-house tailor, and alterations start at 250 kr. Bring the shoes, because the length is measured in them. Ask for extra seam allowance if she is still growing, so the dress can be worn again for the next party. Book a time with the tailor on the same day you buy the dress. Read more about tailoring and alterations.
Do we need to book an appointment before coming to try on confirmation dresses, as you do when trying wedding dresses?
Yes, book an appointment before you come to try on confirmation dresses, especially in January, February and March, when it is busiest. It works the same way as an appointment to try on wedding dresses. That way we have time for you, and she won't have to queue at the mirror. Write her height and size when you book, so the dresses are ready. Set aside an hour, which is enough to try a handful of dresses. Read more in our questions about fittings.
Who should come along when my daughter chooses her confirmation dress, and does the same advice apply as when choosing a wedding dress?
The confirmand herself, one or two adults and a friend if she would like one. If the whole family comes, it becomes her opinion against five others, and she often ends up with a dress she didn't choose herself. Let her speak her mind, even when you don't agree. It is the same advice we give brides choosing a wedding dress: few opinions, but good ones. It is her day and her photos. When you are ready, you can contact us and book a time.
What is actually the difference between a gala dress, a party dress and a wedding gown?
A gala dress is long, often in satin or with beading, and is worn to the most formal occasions. A party dress can be short or long and suits everything from a birthday to a wedding reception. In practice the difference comes down to length and fabric. A wedding gown is made for the bride and is usually white, ivory or cream, and guests leave those colours alone. If you are unsure what the invitation requires, ask the host, and choose long if it says black tie. See our party and confirmation dresses.
Which occasions call for a gala dress in Denmark, and what should you bear in mind next to the wedding dress at a wedding?
In Denmark a gala dress is worn to the upper-secondary school gala, to New Year's Eve, to milestone birthdays in the evening, to weddings where the invitation says black tie or white tie, and to formal company parties. If it is a wedding, choose a gala dress that isn't white and can't be mistaken for the wedding dress. If the invitation says festive or dark suit, a short party dress is enough. Check the invitation, and ask the host if it doesn't say anything. Read more about dress codes in our questions for wedding guests.
I've been invited to a wedding – what should a guest wear so as not to steal attention from the wedding dress?
As a wedding guest you wear a party dress in a colour that isn't white, cream or ivory, and in a length that suits the time of day: shorter in the daytime, longer in the evening. The colour mustn't be mistakable for the wedding dress in the photos. Read the dress code in the invitation, and ask if it doesn't say anything. If the party is outdoors on grass, choose shoes you can walk in. We have party dresses in the showroom. Read more in our questions for wedding guests.
My daughter is getting married – what should I wear as mother of the bride so it suits the wedding gown?
As mother of the bride you should wear something festive that doesn't compete with the bride and isn't white. A dress in a deep colour, a suit or a long dress with sleeves all work. Ask the bride what colour she has in mind and whether the wedding gown is white, ivory or champagne, and do talk to the groom's mother so you don't turn up in the same thing. You need to be able to move, hug and sit for many hours. Find more advice on what to wear in our questions about wedding attire.
Which colours should you avoid as a wedding guest so your dress doesn't resemble the wedding dress?
As a wedding guest you should avoid white, cream, ivory and champagne, in other words anything that could be mistaken for the wedding dress in a photo. Black is fine today, especially in the evening. If the couple have chosen a colour for the bridesmaids, avoid that too unless you are a bridesmaid. If in doubt, send a photo to the bride, it is better than guessing. Read more in our questions about wedding etiquette.
Which dress suits the graduation party so she can dance all night, without it looking like a wedding dress?
For the graduation party, a short or knee-length party dress in a fabric that doesn't crease, with straps or sleeves that stay put, and shoes she can stand in are the right choice. Choose something she can dance in all night and wear again. If she goes for white, keep the cut simple so the dress doesn't look like a short wedding dress. Save the long gala dress for the gala if the school has one. We have party dresses in many sizes, and prices start low. See our party and confirmation dresses.
Which party dress suits New Year's Eve, and can I find sparkle among your coloured wedding dresses?
New Year's Eve is the one evening when glitter, sequins and metallic are completely right, and a long dress is not too much. Choose a party dress you can last in from eight until two, and remember you will stand outside at midnight, so have a stole or a jacket ready. Black, deep red, silver and bottle green are the safe colours. Also see our dresses with colour and glitter.
Do you have party dresses in larger and plus sizes, like your wedding dresses?
Yes, we have party dresses up to the large sizes, and we count plus size from size 46. The dresses hang together with the rest of the range, so you browse the whole shop and not just one corner. Write your size when you book, and the dresses will be ready. If you need a little more room in one measurement, our tailor can often help. Also see our plus size dresses.
