Which wedding dress suits a winter wedding, and a summer one?
In Italy and Greece, brides choose a dress by how hot it will be. In Denmark, we choose by whether it will rain. The Danish weather is part of the plan whether you marry in July or December, and the dress has to be able to cope with it.
The summer wedding
A Danish summer can be 28 degrees in the garden and 14 degrees when the sun goes down. Choose a fabric that lets the air through: chiffon, light lace, tulle or thin crepe. Keep the number of petticoats down. An A-line or a dress with an open back is much cooler than a tight satin corset.
Long sleeves don't have to be too warm if the lace is thin. Try the dress last at the fitting, when you have warmed up, and you will know how it feels on a summer afternoon. And remember sunscreen on your shoulders and back in the morning. A red line along the edge of the dress shows in every photo for the rest of the day.
The winter wedding
Winter weddings have become more popular across the Nordic countries, and it makes sense. The light is soft, venues are available, and there is something special about a wedding with candlelight and darkness outside. Heavier fabrics such as satin, mikado and crepe keep you warm and fall beautifully in the low light.
Long sleeves are a plus both in the church and in the photos outside. Over the dress you can wear a white cape, a faux fur stole or a bolero. And choose shoes you can walk in from the car to the door, even if it is slippery. See our wedding dresses and ask for styles with sleeves when you come in.
October, the new favourite
More and more Danish couples choose October. The light is warm late in the day, the colours outside make the photos beautiful, and both venues and photographers are easier to get than in June. Plan for rain rather than treating it as a surprise. Make sure there is somewhere to go inside and enough umbrellas for the guests. White umbrellas look lovely in the photos too.
Mud and wet grass
If you are having photos taken outdoors, bustle the train before you walk onto the grass, and bring a pair of flat shoes or boots. Wet grass and sand leave marks along the hem that are hard to get out. If the dress has a bustle, it takes three seconds. If you get a stain, let it dry and send the dress for cleaning afterwards. Don't rub it.
